Zagreb - Croatian Parliament Speaker Gordan Jandroković has extended condolences to the family and colleagues of European Parliament President David Sassoli, who passed away early on Tuesday at the age of 65.
"It is with sorrow and regret that I received the news of the death of the President of the European Parliament, David Sassoli. We will remember Mr. Sassoli as a convinced European who strongly supported building a Europe that will provide a better life for its people. He firmly believed in the European project based on respect for the differences among all the nations and member states," Jandroković said in a message.
He added that he will remember their cooperation and meetings for open and constructive dialogue and for Mr. Sassoli's sincere interest in the work of the Croatian Parliament.
Sassoli, an Italian Social Democrat, died in Italy during the night between Monday and Tuesday. His spokesman said on Monday that the EP president had been in hospital since late December "because of a serious complication due to a dysfunction of the immune system."
