Science is foundation of progress in any modern society, Parliament Speaker said

Zagreb - Parliament Speaker Gordan Jandroković, in his capacity as head of the committee for state science awards, opened the first session of the newly appointed body on Thursday, saying science is the foundation of progress in any modern society.

“It is not merely a body of theoretical knowledge, but a driving force of the economy, innovation and overall quality of life. That is why national science awards are not just accolades; they are a message about the values we uphold and the direction we want to take,” he said.

He said the committee has the responsibility to recognise, assess and highlight individuals and teams who push the boundaries of knowledge, contribute to the popularisation of science and society, and strengthen Croatia’s international standing.

Jandroković said the task ahead requires expertise, impartiality and a high degree of responsibility, expressing confidence the committee would ensure a credible and transparent process in which awards go to those who truly merit them.

He underlined the importance of encouraging young scientists, saying their energy, creativity and courage in research are key to the future. “Let these awards also serve as an incentive for new generations to dedicate themselves to science and research.”

He noted that parliament appointed the committee members, drawn from among distinguished scientists, on 29 January.

National science awards are granted for outstanding achievements in research, for expanding scientific knowledge and for accomplishments in applying research results.

The committee comprises the parliament speaker as chair, the science and education minister, and 12 members from among prominent scientists. Its mandate runs for four years.
