
Zagreb - Sabor Speaker Gordan Jandroković, on Monday expressed his condolences to the President of the Congress of Deputies of the Spanish Parliament, Francina Armengol Socias, following a railway accident in southern Spain which took 39 lives.
"I received with great sadness the shocking news of yesterday’s tragic train collision in southern Spain, in which many lives were lost and many people were seriously injured," Jandroković said in a statement addressed to his counterpart.
The accident occurred on Sunday at 7:45 p.m. near Adamuz in the province of Córdoba, about 360 kilometres south of the capital Madrid, and more than 150 people were injured. So far, there is no information indicating that Croatian citizens are among the victims.
"At this extremely difficult moment for your country, on behalf of the Croatian Parliament and personally, I express my sincere condolences to all those who lost their loved ones in yesterday’s serious accident. Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they cope with the consequences of this truly tragic event. At the same time, I take this opportunity to wish all those injured a speedy recovery and a swift return to their families."
In one of the most serious railway accidents in Spain’s history, a high-speed train carrying 317 passengers from Málaga to Madrid derailed at a speed of around 200 kilometres per hour. The authorities are investigating the cause of the accident, and Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has declared three days of national mourning.
