New composition of State Election Commission proposed

Zagreb - Vesna Fabijančić Križanić and Josip Salapić should be co-chairing the State Election Commission (DIP) in the next eight years and Slaven Hojski, Ivana Ljulj and Draženko Pandek should become its members.

A proposal to that effect was formulated on Thursday and forwarded to the Sabor by its Elections, Appointments and Administration Committee and the parliament could vote on it on Friday.

Fabijančić Križanić and Hojski have already served one term on DIP, she as its vice-president and he as a member, and they were nominated for another term by the SDP, the HSLS and ethnic minorities.

Salapić, a former MP currently serving as State Secretary at the Justice Ministry, is the candidate of the HDZ party, Ljulj, a lawyer from Split, is the candidate of the Bridge party, and Pandek was nominated by the Social Democrats.

The terms of four DIP members expire on 8 March, and one seat was left vacant in the autumn of 2021 when DIP member Josip Vresk died, so this time the parliament will be electing five new-old members.

The nominations mean that DIP vice-president Ana Lovrin is leaving due to retirement, as is Emil Tomljanović. They had both been nominated by the HDZ.

The HDZ and its partners in July 2019 elected their candidate Ivana Belec as DIP member, and it now the HDZ had the right to decide on a vice-president and one member of DIP, while the Opposition was entitled to choose one vice-president and two members.

DIP has a president, who is always, by virtue of office, the Supreme Court President, as well as four vice-presidents and four members.

DIP president is Supreme Court President Radovan Dobronić, and the two vice-presidents from among judges are Damira Kontrec and Jasenka Žapčić.

The two DIP vice-presidents who are not judges and four members are elected by the parliament - one vice-president and two members are nominated by the parliamentary majority, and the other vice-president and two other members by the Opposition, depending on the number of seats at the time of the election.

This specifically means that this time candidates could be nominated by the SDP, the Social Democrats and the Bridge party, which have the most deputies.
