The fundamental mission of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM) is to bring together representatives of Mediterranean states for the purpose of promoting political dialogue, encouraging economic and cultural cooperation, enhancing democracy and the rule of law, respecting human rights and developing dialogue between cultures, civilizations and religions with the aim of finding common solutions to the challenges facing the Mediterranean region and creating a space for peace and prosperity of the citizens. PAM’s complement the work of other regional and international bodies entrusted with the responsibility to foster security, stability and peace in the Mediterranean.

The inaugural session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean was held in Amman (Jordan) in 2006.

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean brings together 28 member states that are represented in the Assembly through their national delegations who have equal rights of decision-making and voting, and who consider political, social, economic and cultural issues and make decisions of immediate concern to all the countries in the region. Malta has hosted the General Secretariat of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean since September 2007.
