Vukovar - Parliament Speaker Josip Leko at a commemoration on Tuesday in Vukovar marking the 15th anniversary of the completion of the peaceful reintegration of eastern Slavonia said "we wish to build democratic standards and better living standards and that is why it is vital to avoid any nationalist outbursts".
Today we are celebrating "a policy of peace as opposed to war, a policy of the future opposed to that of the past and a policy of unity opposed to division," he said, recalling that with the process of peaceful reintegration in the Croatian Danube River Region, which was completed on this day 15 years ago, Croatia peacefully eliminated the results of the aggression of 1991.
He told residents in that region that peace had been granted and an opportunity to build coexistence. Today, we also celebrate the 21st anniversary of Croatia's international recognition which makes January 15 a special day in Croatian history.
The process of peaceful reintegration returned temporarily occupied areas of Osijek-Baranja and Vukovar-Srijem counties known as the Croatian Danube River Region to the constitutional and legal order of the Republic of Croatia. (Hina)
