Petrov advocates targeted border checks

Zagreb - The EU regulation about border checks must not jeopardise freedom of movement as one of the fundamental values of the European Union and create major traffic jams at border crossings, Croatian Parliament Speaker Božo Petrov said in Bratislava on Monday.

Petrov is taking part in a conference of parliament speakers from EU member states in Bratislava, which focused on the future of the EU as a global factor in the context of contemporary global changes and the role of national parliaments. In his speech, Petrov said that European citizens, who are getting more worried for their security by the day, need to be given clear answers as well as a systematic, efficient and permanent solution for the forthcoming challenges. He said targeted border checks were the answers to illegal migration issues, terrorist and other security threats.

Petrov stressed that the application of the EU border regulation should not jeopardise freedom of movement as one of the fundamental EU values by creating endless waiting lines at border crossings, notably when it comes to border crossings between two EU member states. Petrov in Bratislava also expressed an expectation that Croatia would soon enter the Schengen area and that the EU enlargement process would continue. (Hina)
