Zagreb - Parliament Speaker Gordan Jandroković said on Wednesday that such evil as was done during World War Two must never happen again in this region, and called for promotion of democratic values in the Croatian society.
- We have come here to pay tribute to the victims of the Ustasha-run camp in Jasenovac, show solidarity with their families and condemn the nature of the Ustasha regime which was a criminal regime that killed and persecuted people on the grounds of their religion, ethnicity or political affiliation, Jandroković said after today's wreath-laying ceremony on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of a break-out of internees from the concentration camp.
He underscored the importance of this message for younger generations so that they can realise that freedom, democracy and human rights cannot be taken for granted. - There are always people eager to deny them, Jandroković said, adding that "we must make sure that those values prevail in the Croatian society."
- We must never let such evil as happened during the Second World War happen again, Jandroković said.
He called for building an inclusive society, for mutual respect and for an objective approach to historical facts.
- We must always seek ways how to commemorate sites such as Jasenovac together and in a dignified manner, Jandroković said.
