New law to replace 40-year-old legislation on national weather service

Zagreb - The Croatian parliament on Friday discussed a bill on meteorological and hydrological services aimed at strengthening the role of these services in reducing the damage caused by natural disasters, protecting the environment and health, boosting transport safety and in planning food and energy production.

The bill is to replace the existing legislation dating back to the 1970s.

Environment Protection and Energy Ministry's State Secretary Mile Horvat told lawmakers that the proposed bill was adjusted to contemporary legislative trends, including the obligation of establishing a national integrated system for observing a state of affairs in both the atmosphere and hydrosphere.

Domagoj Mikulić of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) said during the debate that the legislation in this field needed to be updated.

Anka Mrak-Taritaš of the club of the GLAS and HSU lawmakers announced their support to the proposed legislation.
