Zagreb - The Croatian Parliament on Friday held a minute of silence in memory of the President of the Supreme Court Radovan Dobronić, who died last Saturday after a long and serious illness.
"I call on you to observe a minute of silence in honour of the man who led the judiciary for the last three and a half years," said the Parliament Speaker, Gordan Jandroković.
Dobronić passed away on 8 March at his home, after a long and difficult illness, at the age of 65.
He was elected to the position of President of the Supreme Court in October 2021, and his appointment put an end to a months-long disagreement over candidates for the position between Croatian President, Zoran Milanović, as the constitutional proposer, and Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, who held the parliamentary majority at the time.
Dobronić attracted the attention of a broader public as a commercial court judge who ruled in favour of Swiss franc-indexed loan holders.
He was appointed Chief Justice with support from a broad political spectrum at a time when the judiciary was often referred to as the weakest link in Croatian society.
