Zagreb - To mark All Saints' Day, Parliament Speaker Gordan Jandroković and his delegation laid wreaths at Zagreb's Mirogoj Cemetery on Friday, saying they paid tribute to all who lost their lives for Croatia's freedom, including French volunteer Jean-Michel Nicolier, "one of the greatest symbols of the Homeland War".
"These days we remember our loved ones who have left us and found their eternal peace, and today we are here on behalf of the Croatian Parliament to express our respect and light a candle for all those who gave their lives and sacrificed themselves for our freedom," Jandroković said.
Together with the parliamentary delegation, he laid wreaths and lit candles in tribute to the Croatian soldiers and civilians killed during the 1991-1995 war, as well as to Croatia's first president, Franjo Tuđman.
"We remembered the civilian and military victims of the war and paid special respect to Croatia's first president, Dr Franjo Tuđman, and to the defenders. Today we also remembered (Jean-Michel) Nicolier, our defender who came from France and laid down his life here for Croatia. We remember him today as one of the greatest symbols of the Homeland War," he said.
