Jandroković: Migrant crisis shows importance of southeast Europe

Zagreb - During the migrant crisis it became again evident that southeast Europe had strategic importance, Croatian Parliament Speaker Gordan Jandroković said in Dubrovnik on Saturday, expressing regret that the European Union failed to systematically deal with that region.

During the Dubrovnik Forum Jandroković praised tribute to Bulgaria for having brought again South East Europe into the focus of the EU during its presidency over the union in the first half of this year, and added that Croatia would also dedicate considerable attention to the region during its chairmanship in the first half of 2020.

The increasingly conflict-prone and complex present-day environment has brought for EU citizens uncertainty and fear of migrations, terrorism, and of organised crime as well as of climate and demographic changes, trade protectionism and disrespect for international law, Jandroković said in his speech at the Dubrovnik Forum.

All these challenges test the European project of stability and democracy which have kept the EU alive for more than 60 years. The parliament speaker recalls that the EU has been focused in the financial crisis for some time which 's why its international position has weakened.

However, the EU has realised that it must again assume a role in the world, he added. (Hina)
